About the Shaykh
Ahmad ibn Abd al-Halim Ibn Taymiyyah (661–728 AH / 1263–1328) was born in Harran and raised in Damascus. He taught Hanbali fiqh, tafsir, and creed, and wrote against Jahmi ta’til, Rafidi excess, and philosophy presented as religion.
Al-Aqeedah al-Wasitiyyah, al-Hamawiyyah, and Minhaj al-Sunnah set out Athari creed: Allah is described as He described Himself, without likening and without stripping. He argued from Qur’an, Sunnah, and the speech of the salaf.
He was imprisoned more than once, including in the citadel of Damascus where he died. His student Ibn al-Qayyim carried his books. Later Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and the contemporary Salafi teachers read him as a renewer of the Athari way, not as a fifth madhhab.
