Ismail ibn Umar ibn Kathir (701–774 AH / 1300–1373) wrote the tafsir that Salafi lessons use most after the Qur’an itself. He was Shafi'i in fiqh and Athari in creed, a student of Ibn Taymiyyah and al-Mizzi.
His method is to explain the Qur’an by the Qur’an, then the Sunnah, then the statements of the salaf. Al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah and his seerah sit beside the tafsir.
